monuments found in the city of Midas near Eskiflehir and Aslantafl, near
Afyon, as representative of Phyrgian statue art. Places to see in Gordion
are the city mound and tumuli. Let’s first check out the mound, then move
over to the tumuli. Measuring 350x500 m. the flat, wide mound which was
once where the Phrygians lived, was formerly excavated by Rodney S.
Young, and is being excavated currently by Prof. Kenneth G. Sams. A
monumental gate and homes belonging to the royal family have been
brought to light during the excavations.
As for the city gate, it was inclined and carved from limestone, whereby a
section measuring 9 m. high still stands. This portal, which measures
9x23 m., was erected in the late-8 th century BC. It has two towers
standing on either side whereas these towers had courtyards which
opened out to the city and were used as armories. At the entry portal is a
small house made from various colored stones and dating back to
750-725 BC. Archaeologists have named it the ‘Polychrome House.’ The
central section of the mound was divided into a palace edifice which was
formed of several megarons. There were house-types with two rooms. The
No.2 megaron, which is situated next to No.1 megaron in the first
courtyard, was made from dark red, blue and white pebbles and covered
with a geometric designed mosaic. Reeds covered this house with a
semerdam roof. It was then covered with a layer of clay. The No.3 megaron
at Gordion measures 18.30x30.40 m. and is the largest structure of the
