IESNA Cutoff Post Top directs light only onto pavement surfaces, but dark
spots can be a problem.
Prismatic Acorn Distriburtion provides vertical illumination of surrounding
building facades, but also leaks light in the night sky.
Make effi cient use of energy for lighting applications.
Minimize lighting by illuminating only areas
as required for safety and comfort. Encourage
the use of high-effi ciency lighting to reduce
energy consumption and increase lamp
longevity, such as with advanced LED warm
light technology. When security lighting is
not required, lighting should use motion
sensors or daylight sensors to turn off or
be automatically controlled to turn off after
curfew hours, which will help reduce night
sky illumination and conserve energy.
Where practical, direct lighting to surfaces
that will refl ect diff used lighting into wide
areas to improve illumination and reduce
the number of fi xtures and amount of lighting
(and energy) used. This technique is especially
eff ective at illuminating spaces under canopies,
or other overhangs. Refl ective-type lighting
fi xtures can reduce or eliminate glare and
increase light dispersal. Care must be taken
to balance the benefi ts of diff used, scatt ered
light with the detriments of night sky light
pollution. Use high effi ciency (metal halide or
high pressure sodium lamps) or alternatively
powered (solar) lighting. To reduce dependence
on high-watt age electrical lighting at night,
use light colored or refl ective edges along
driveways or walkways.
