Improve pedestrian safety at vehicle crossings.
Pedestrian crosswalks and routes at vehicle
crossings should be delineated with a
contrasting surface material or other elements
to distinguish walking areas and to alert and
caution drivers. Suggested practices include
detectable warning surfaces, directional
textures, warning signs or lights, audible
signals, or paint markings. A change in
paving material or color can also indicate
a change in conditions, such as modular
pavers, integrated color concrete or asphalt,
or stamped concrete or asphalt. As suggested
in other Best Practices, permeable pavements
are encouraged. Also consider using bollards
or other separation devices at pedestrian
crossings, such as on medians or islands
within long pedestrian crossings, to increase
the visibility of the crossing location and
improve pedestrian safety.
