CI 03 LA IN LI CI AM Provide an interconnected network of safe, attractive, and shaded sidewalks and walkways. Walkway systems allow pedestrians to safely access their destinations and encourage walking as part of a healthier lifestyle. Destinations include transit stops, places of employment, parks and open space, recreation facilities, schools, churches, temples and residences. Primary walking areas should be clear of all vertical obstructions, such as utility boxes, fi re hydrants, and other elements. Relocation of existing utilities may be required to meet safety considerations. All sidewalks and walkways should be barrier free and meet universal access and ADA standards. Ensure that major or primary pedestrian pathways are paved, well-lighted and signed, and wide enough to accommodate peak pedestrian fl ows. Wide sidewalks can also provide amenity zones for local businesses to display signs or include outdoor seating areas for cafes and restaurants. 118 │ BEST PRACTICES TxDOT and some cities within the District have developed a network of trail systems. Every eff ort should be made to link residential areas, employment centers, and Project Stars sites to help complete the network. The region’s bikeway plans can be found in Appendix C. Wide, landscaped pedestrian ways enhance the pedestrian experience. Sidewalks can take many shapes and forms. Natural elements provide a sense of adventure and added visual interest.
