Plant a diversity of tree species.
LA IN LI CI AM
Multiple species and varieties of street trees
will safeguard against the eff ects of disease
related to individual species and to provide
vertical massing and aesthetic interest. Mass
or dispersed tree plantings should att empt to
duplicate natural forests or woodlands typical
of the region. Tree planting within the District
should connect to its historic status and
evoke the historic, pre-sett lement landscape.
Groups of trees of diff erent height, species,
and character are more evocative of historic
conditions than large scale plantings of a
single species. Tree groupings also provide
a greater habitat diversity and resistance to
disease and pest infestations.
University of Florida – USFS Tree Fact Sheets
The Environmental Horticulture Department at
the University of Florida maintains a helpful list of
trees specifi c to the Southern United States. Each
entry provides a fact sheet prepared by the US
Forest Service that includes information such
as a description of the tree, its range, use, and
management needs. (http://hort.ufl .edu/trees/)
