Provide shade trees along sidewalks or paths.
Shade trees create more pleasant walking
spaces and reduce the urban heat island eff ect
of paved surfaces. Trees improve air quality,
provide shading and cooling for the urban
heat island, increase property values, and
create wildlife habitat for native species. Tree
planting should avoid confl icts with utility
corridors, such as pipeline easements.
Before you dig, contact utility companies to locate and mark any
underground utilities. (Call 1-800-DIG-TESS)
33.
Clear a proper size circle of vegetation.
44.
Dig a hole 2 to 3 times larger in diameter than the tree root ball.
55.
Remove the container or burlap from the root ball.
66.
Loosen the roots and set the tree in the hole, with the root collar
slightly above soil level.
77.
Fill around the root ball, mulch around the tree and protect the trunk
with a tree guard.
88.
Finally, whether you consider it the last step of your planting or the
beginning of your aftercare, water the tree thoroughly with a drip or
trickle method.
