Preserve, restore, and recreate natural landscape elements.
Native habitat, hydrology, and landscape
features, including healthy soils, topography,
wetlands, streams and water resource buff ers
should be identifi ed, preserved and recreated.
It is especially critical to preserve and protect
rare remnant native vegetation because they
represent the genetic memory of the region.
Landscape features that have been modifi ed,
degraded, or lost (buried, piped, drained,

channelized, etc.) can be restored to help
evoke the pre-sett lement landscape of the
historic district. Any remnant natural areas
within the 228,000-acre District should be
identifi ed. Identify areas to recreate the native
habitat where appropriate, as these areas
provide opportunities for interpretation,
education, and eco-tourism.
