Native Landscape Systems
Defi nition
Establishment of native vegetation in
landscaped areas and often as a component of
other stormwater best management practices
such as fi lter strips, bioretention features, and
green roofs. Deep root systems (3 to 10 feet
or more) help fi lter and absorb rainwater. A
fi lter strip is an area with dense, preferably
native vegetative cover (they can also be
planted with turf grass) that is used to slow,
fi lter, and absorb runoff from impervious
areas. Use native plant and tree species that
are adapted to urban applications.
Applicability
Native landscapes are appropriate for nearly
all new and retrofi t landscapes on individual
lots and District-wide. Native landscapes can
be used for rainwater management practices,
parks, green roofs, residential courtyards,
and gardens.

Native landscapes and natural materials can enhance the look and feel of
a space.
Native plants can be used as an accent material with conventional turfgrass.
Native species can add year-round color and beauty.
