IN 01 LA IN LI CI AM Preserve, restore, and recreate natural landscape elements. Native habitat, hydrology, and landscape features, including healthy soils, topography, wetlands, streams and water resource buff ers should be identifi ed, preserved and recreated. It is especially critical to preserve and protect rare remnant native vegetation because they represent the genetic memory of the region. Landscape features that have been modifi ed, degraded, or lost (buried, piped, drained, Capping Agricultural Drain Tiles 98 │ BEST PRACTICES channelized, etc.) can be restored to help evoke the pre-sett lement landscape of the historic district. Any remnant natural areas within the 228,000-acre District should be identifi ed. Identify areas to recreate the native habitat where appropriate, as these areas provide opportunities for interpretation, education, and eco-tourism. Caption for IMAGE shown above. Natural landforms provide visual interest. Natural vegetation and landforms can screen and de-emphasize utilities and industrial features of the landscape. Shape earth forms (berms, troughs) for screening (and surface water management where necessary) to emulate the generally fl at or gently sloping landform of the presett lement landscape. Unnatural-looking landforms should be avoided. As various areas develop with residential, commercial or industrial uses, they should incorporate natural land forms to minimize mass grading and soil compaction, and emulate the natural landscape aesthetic. Including native and adapted species with natural landforms can further enhance the views and character of the District.
