Freeway intersections are of interest to more than this Corridor Standards eff ort, as the illustrations below and at right demonstrate. These images, from Harris County Precinct 2 Project Stars Icon Design and Guidelines (2008), illustrate a design concept that incorporate a number of the Design Elements proposed within the Corridor Standards, including trees, fencing, and signage. Incorporating additional Design Elements into these conceptual designs could enhance these intersections and add to their distinctive historic character, such as: Interstate 225 and Independence Parkway intersection (Harris County Precinct 2 Project Stars Icon Design and Guidelines, 2008. Clark Condon Associates). 22 │ SCENARIOS • • Incorporate additional iconography, such as locally-crafted metalwork stars welded into the overpass metal railing, and EPICArt murals painted onto structural walls and foundations. Enhance the existing planting with a selection from the recommended trees, shrubs, groundcover, and other vegetation that approximate the appearance of a more native Texas fl ora. • Integrate bio-infi ltration measures along the roadways to capture and infi ltrate freeway runoff and reduce the fl ow of pollutants to the area waterways.
