Project Stars sites occur throughout the District in a wide variety of sett ings and environments, from Freeway interchanges to Community Gateways to sites imbued with a deep historic value and signifi cance. As with Community Gateways, a wide variety of applications of Design Elements and Best Practices are possible depending on the context and character of the surrounding landscape. Project Stars Site Profi le Restored native prairie and wetland landscape enhances the ecological function of the bayou Restored woodland landscape in upland areas serves as backdrop for monuments 46 │ SCENARIOS Large public art makes use of under utilized and fragmented space Accent light illuminates sculpture and monuments at night Low, ornamental landscape provides foundation for Project Stars monuments The enhancement of Project Stars sites is focused on the area surrounding the monuments, whether through the inclusion of benches, signage, accent lighting, or landscaping. It is critical, however, that the design and layout of elements must evoke the special qualities of each of the Project Stars locations. EPICArt can enhance industrial landscapes. Pedestrian routes connecting historic sites and other destinations would enhance the attractiveness and visitation of the District. Water features, streams, and stormwater management facilities can enhance the character of an area.
