SITE FURNISHINGS Trail Bench ■ An all wood bench fi ts in well with the rural character of most trail systems. ■ The wood used for construction should be naturally rot resistant (i.e. Douglas Fir or Redwood). Cedar should not be used because of its propensity to splinter. ■ Arm rests and backs should be provided for most applications for added comfort and to assist the elderly and disabled. ■ A backless bench can be provided where seating in two directions is desired. ■ Benches should be embedded in concrete footings or surface mounted to the pavement Recommended Manufacturer/Model ■ DuMor / #51 and #105 ■ Estimated Installed Cost: $1000 (c.2010) 68 │ DESIGN ELEMENTS Local Retail Benches ■ ■ ■ A variety of custom benches are available through local retailers. Many retail benches are intended for noncommercial applications, but may be suitable for certain applications in the district Estimated Installed Cost: $225 (top), $200 (bott om) Amenities such as benches, drinking fountains, bike racks, and bus shelters may be used throughout the region to reinforce the corridor character at a pedestrianscale. The suggested selection of materials and options should be a starting point for product sourcing. Care should be given during the selection process to identify site-specifi c issues that may inform long-term maintenance decisions. In some cases custom furnishings may be desired, which presents additional opportunities to incorporate local materials, artisans, and craftsment into the <strong>design</strong> and fabrication process. Urban Bench ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ In urban areas, benches should be steel or aluminum frame for added stability. Wooden slats will be more comfortable when dry but will also require more maintenance. Metal slats will dry quickly in both the winter and summer. Arm rests and backs should be provided for most applications for added comfort and to assist the elderly and disabled.
