The presence of curb extensions narrows
the street width and can reduce driving
speeds.
Curb extensions separate parking
maneuvers from vehicles turning at
intersections.
Cost Considerations
■
■
■
■
The cost for retrofi tt ing an existing
intersection with tighter curbs can range
between $1,500 to $2,500 per corner
depending upon existing conditions.
The cost of painted crosswalk can range
from $12 to $15 per lineal foot.
To renovate an existing roadway surface
with a separate paving material for the
crosswalk area, a budget of $10 to $15 per
square foot is recommended.
To renovate an existing roadway with a
curb extension a budget of $2,500 to $5,000
per corner is recommended.
Design & Maintenance Considerations
■
■
■
■
■
The radii selected for intersection corners
should accommodate the largest vehicle
type that will frequently turn the corner.
This principle assumes that the occasional
large vehicle can encroach into the
opposing travel lane, or mount the curb.
A minimum marking treatment should
consist of high contrast painted lines in
accordance with the most recent edition
of the Federal Highway Administration’s
Manual on Uniform Traffi c Control
Devices. See (htt p://mutcd.fh wa.dot.gov/)
A bett er marking treatment will integrate
a separate paving material within the
crosswalk area that visibly contrasts with
the road surface. This approach will be
more durable and last longer than painted
lines which will wear away.
The design of curb extensions should
respect street drainage patt erns so that
rain water runoff does not collect behind
them.
The use of curb extensions should be
limited to situations where on-street
parking exists.
