Provide dedicated bicycle facilities such as bike lanes and bike racks
where bicycle traffi c is expected to be high.
Dedicated bike lanes can be provided where
frequent bicycle traffi c is expected. Striped
bike lanes create an environment where
bicycle and vehicle movements are more
predictable. They also make it less likely that
motorists will stray into the path of a bicyclist.
Bike lanes should be one-way facilities and
should carry bike traffi c in the same direction
as the adjacent motor vehicle traffi c. (Consult
AASHTO’s Guide for the development of
bicycle facilities.)
Bike racks should be located in downtown
and commercial retail environments. Racks
can be placed in parkway areas on paved
surfaces. Adequate space should be given to
the rack to ensure that bicycles do not overlap
sidewalk, or parking areas.
