1 Puhun tulevaisuuden teknologiasta tässä hyvin ylimalkaisesti.
Avartava esitys aiheesta on esimerkiksi Ray
Kurzweilin The Singularity is Near – When Humans
Transcend Biology. Filosofinen esitys tulevaisuuden
teknologiaan suhtautumisesta on myöhemmin tekstissä
esille tuleva Simon Youngin Designer Evolution: A
Transhumanist Manifesto. Siinä Young esittää, kuinka
transhumanistit pyrkivät parantamaan ihmisen osaa
(human condition) tieteen ja teknologian avulla.
2 Bostrom visioi tulevaisuutta, jossa ihminen – jos häntä
enää sillä nimellä voidaan kutsua – kykenee monin
tavoin paranneltuna käsittämään ja kokemaan maailman
laajemmin. Katso Bostrom 2002, 5-10.
3 Kyborgin käsite on ongelmallinen, sillä analyyttisesti
se voidaan ymmärtää joko maksimaalisesti tai minimaalisesti.
Minimaalisen näkemyksen (esimerkiksi
Andy Clark) mukaan ihmisestä on tullut kyborgi heti
kun jokin hänen bio-osistaan on korvattu kone-osalla.
Maksimaalisen näkemyksen (esimerkiksi Donna Haraway)
mukaan ihmisestä tulee kyborgi vasta kun hän
on korvautunut koneella. Määrittelyssä on muitakin
mutkia, katso Airaksinen 2006, 61-70.
Looking Good for Life – Good Looks as a Life Goal for Finnish
Students
This article examines the importance of good looks as a Finnish students’ life goal in the light of two
attitudinal variables, the importance of good looks in the current phase of life and a high standard
of living as a life goal. The article also examines the impact of central socio-demographic variables.
The data utilized in the analysis were collected via the Internet in 2007. A total of 1 208 students
aged 18−30 from different Finnish universities and polytechnics answered the survey. As predicted,
it was found that students who consider good looks important in the current phase of life, also attach
more importance to being attractive at the age of 35. In addition, the results also indicate that good
looks and high standard of living are interrelated with each other as students’ life goals. It appears
that the importance of good looks at the age 35 can also be explained by students’ gender and field
of study, but not significantly by age.
Feminist Critiques and Visions of the Future
In this article we present first some anticipations of how women’s status will develop in next few
decades. Next we study how and why the women’s perspective has remained in shadow in current
futures research. Central is Ziauddin Sardars concept the colonization of the future, which is accurately
described by Jim Dator: ”the only relevant futurists in the world are a handful of old white American
men.” The most dangerous field of colonization of future is controlled reproduction, through which
women can be made even totally useless. Women’a view on future deviate form the mainstream of
male views so, that in societies governed by women there is better equality, they live in peace with
nature and have some sort of sustainable growth. Because the theories and methods of male futures
research are not necessarily useful for women, thee most important women’s perspective representing
futures images and visions are utopian, they describe the wished society. Out of these we analyze
the visions of Elise Boulding and Riane Eisler. To conclude we present two contradictory skenarios
about the relationships of the genders: 1. Global patriarchy and 2. Future based on equality. To give
more emphasis of women’s perspective in Futures research would radically enrich the discussion.
Keywords: women’s status, women’s visions, feminist utopias, colonization of the future, gender
relations, gentle society, partnership society.
Gender and Sexual Scenarios on the Glocal Scale
This article considers possible scenarios in relation to gender and sexuality, on the global or glocal
scale. Critical gendered approaches to globalization can be enhanced by: explicit gendering of men;
multiple, often contradictory, scenarios in processes of transnationalization; and analysis of both gender
relations and sexuality and sexual violence. Gender scenarios comprise: the doomsday or global
patriarchy scenario: more divergence of men and women and greater oppression and inequality; the
bi-polar model: more divergence and greater equality; the postgender model: more convergence of
men and women and greater equality; and the postmodern model: more convergence and greater
oppression and inequality. These are paralleled by sexual scenarios: the sexual violence or global
heteropatriarchies scenario; the sexual diversification scenario; the sexual blurring scenario; and
the environmental, postmodern or late capitalism scenario: Special attention is given to socio-tech-
