Au Libéria, trois anciens enfants soldats nous invitent à partager leur
vie et nous montrent comment il leur est difficile de réintégrer la société
d’après guerre. Dans leur lutte contre une discrimination dont ils ne
parlent que trop peu, ils se relèvent toujours, donnant l’exemple d’un
espoir qui sert de première brique à la reconstruction. Sam, ancien rebelle
puis soldat de Taylor, a suivi le programme de réinsertion d’où il
est sorti avec son diplôme de couture. Aujourd’hui le travail est rare et
il poursuit son rêve de devenir footballeur.
Abraham n’a bénéficié d’aucun soutien. L’école n’était pas pour lui, les
formations non plus. Il vit devant la plage et travaille quand on veut
bien de lui.
Doris se réveille tard. Elle cuisine pour sa fille qui revient de l’école.
Elle la met au lit puis se maquille pour se prostituer au Florida Motel.

In Liberia, three former child soldiers invite us into their lives, where we experience
firsthand the challenges of their reintegration into post civil war society.
A former rebel turned soldier in the army of President Taylor, Sam graduated
from the reintegration program where he was trained as a tailor. But now, with
work hard to come by, he follows his dream of becoming a professional footballer.
Abraham’s conversion from military to civilian life has been more difficult. Unable
to adjust to school or to jobs training programmes, he now lives near the
shore, working at odd jobs when he can.
Dorris wakes up late. She cooks for her daughter, due back from school. She
then puts her to sleep, makes herself up, puts on her best and goes to work as
a prostitute at the Florida Motel.

Il était question pour moi de raconter la destinée d’une ville à travers
trois personnes qui représentaient une hypothétique classe moyenne
africaine. Lorsque le tournage a démarré, les trois personnages que
j’avais choisis étaient en train de construire. J’ai filmé cela en voyant
les scènes de construction comme des métaphores de leur construction
personnelle (chacun y construit avec les moyens qu’il a) et comme une
métaphore globale sur l’avancement d’une ville et de ses habitants.
My aim was to tell the story of a town by following three people who all belong
to an apparent African middle class. The three people I chose were all involved
in building projects when the production began, and as I filmed I viewed this as
a metaphor for their personal development (everyone builds with what they
have), and as a wider metaphor for the development of a town and its inhabitants.
