Né en 1979 dans un camp de réfugiés du peuple sahraoui, Zrug,
comme tant d’autres de ses compatriotes, vit une enfance difficile dépourvue
de paix, ne connaissant que la guerre et l’insécurité.
Envoyé à Cuba pour y être scolarisé, Zrug est heureux de partir avec
ses amis. Mais les contacts avec sa famille restée dans les camps
étant très rares, voire inexistants, les souvenirs de cette vie finissent
par s’estomper. A son retour, il se rend compte que la vie des camps a
changé de manière drastique, et que sa connaissance de son propre
pays se résume désormais aux histoires racontées par sa famille et
les aînés.
Zrug travaille à présent comme traducteur et interprète au Ministère
de l’Information du Sahara Occidental. Il est plus que jamais décidé à
se battre pour la liberté des siens et à regagner avec eux leur pays.

In 1975, Western Sahara was invaded by its neighbors from both sides, Morocco
and Mauritania. Many thousands of Saharaui fled over 700 miles until they finally
found their refuge in the deserts of Algeria. Over 200,000 Saharaui are
still living in camps, while others live in adverse conditions in the occupied territories
of Western Sahara.
Born in 1979 in the refugee camps of the Saharawi people. Zrug, like many
other peers had a tough childhood where they had never known peace, only
war and insecurity.
When he left for Cuba for his primary education, Zrug was happy to go away
with his friends, but with little or no communication available with his family in
the camps his memories of cam life became blurred. On returning to the camps,
he discovered that life in the camps had changed dramatically, and the only
thing he knew about his homeland was the stories told by his relatives and elders.
Zrug now works as a translator and interpreter in the ministry of information in
Western Sahara. He is now more than determined to fight for freedom and have
their land back.

Dans un monde où les armes nucléaires et les guerres inondent les titres
de la presse, un petit groupe d’artistes luttent de manière non-violente
contre les injustices. Ils sont non-violents dans leur façon de
faire, mais pas pour autant inefficaces. Les caricaturistes du continent
africain démontrent tous les jours qu’ils peuvent changer leur monde
avec leurs crayons. Ils s’opposent aux tyrans puissants, aux magnats
du monde « corporate » et ils représentent la voix du peuple avec seulement
leurs dessins comme arme. On dit souvent qu’une image vaut
mille mots. Regardez ces artistes qui font parler des images pour des
milliers de personnes.

In a world where nuclear weapons and armed wars dominate the press titles, a
bunch of artists fight distinctively and non-violently against injustices. Non-violent
in their means, but not less effective, cartoonists of Africa have proven that
change CAN come from their pens. They oppose powerful tyrants, bigwigs of
the political and corporate worlds and represent the voice of the people, all this
with just their drawings and cartoon strips. They say, a picture’s worth a thousand
words.
