Imaginez vous dans dix, vingt, cinquante ans, deux siècles, en train
de relire ces lignes, de feuilleter ce programme, vous ou quelqu’un
d’autre.
Vous vous direz certainement que le monde appartient décidément
à ceux qui y croient.
Car en ce début de troisième millénaire, il fallait une bonne dose de
conviction et d’anticipation pour bâtir un rendez-vous des
professionnels du film documentaire africain en Afrique. Et il en
fallait tout autant quand on était Canadien, Brésilien, Européen, pour
venir repérer des auteurs et des films africains à Saint-Louis du
Sénégal.
Pourtant, à y regarder de plus près, ce n’était déjà que la suite
logique d’un phénomène propre au 21ème siècle, le métissage des
peuples et l’avènement des civilisations de l’image.
On n’en mesurait d’ailleurs pas encore vraiment tous les effets, et
surtout les modifications que cela opérerait dans ce qui faisait la
spécificité de l’espèce humaine, la transmission de l’expérience et
de la mémoire.
On ne le mesurait pas, car il est toujours difficile de juger les choses
quand elles sont en train de se produire.
Néanmoins, en ce mois de juillet 2009, les organisateurs et les
participants au LOUMA de Saint-Louis du Sénégal pensaient que le
documentaire, en tant que genre instruisant et documentant le
monde, avait et aurait un rôle capital dans les sociétés de l’image.
Cette pensée était pour quelques uns une conviction, pour certains
une intuition forte, et enfin, pour d’autres, une attitude pragmatique
pour répondre à la demande d’un public toujours plus nombreux qui
voulait des nouvelles du monde tel qu’il était, « le vrai monde », pas
forcément celui de l’actualité.
Ainsi était, et est le LOUMA de Saint-Louis du Sénégal. On peut y
voir et y acheter les documentaires africains d’aujourd’hui et
coproduire ceux de demain.
Un pari passionnant, nécessaire et un peu fou auquel chacun de
nous pourra plus tard dire en se moquant : « j’y étais ! ».
Imagine yourself 10, 20, 50, 200 years from now, yourself or
anybody else reading this text and leafing through this programme.
You’d most likely be thinking that the world belongs to those who
do have faith in something.
At the start of the third millennium, a certain amount of conviction
and anticipation was required to create a gathering of African
documentary film professionals in Africa. And just as much of both
was also required for any Canadian, Brazilian or European
professional to participate and pick out African authors and African
films in Saint-Louis du Sénégal. However, considering it more
precisely, one would realize that this had already been the logical
follow-up of a trend belonging to the 21st century: the miscegenation
of people and the appearance of the civilization of images. At that
time, we had no clear idea yet of what would derive from all this,
nor of the changes that would occur in what is specific to mankind,
i.e. handing down experience and memory.
We couldn’t yet evaluate, as it is always difficult to evaluate things
while they are taking place.
However, in July 2009, both organizers and participants of LOUMA
in Saint-Louis du Sénégal thought that documentary cinema, a film
genre that educates people and documents the world, already had
and would further have a major part to play in societies of images.
Some of the Louma people were truly convinced, some had a
strong intuition, and the others simply had a practical attitude,
willing to supply an increasing demand by the public for information
about the world as it is, the “real world”, not necessarily the world
shown on daily news.
This is how LOUMA in Saint-Louis du Sénégal used to be and still
is. There, you can see and buy the African documentary films of
today and co-produce the films of tomorrow.
This is an exciting, important and somewhat crazy challenge about
which each of us will later be able to say: « I was there! ».
