La plupart des murs des maisons de Saint-Louis sont recouverts de
peintures figurant le maître de la confrérie mouride, Amadou Bamba.
Ces fresques sont aussi présentes sur les drapeaux des bateaux, sur
les calèches, sur certains vêtements, sur les devantures des boutiques,
dans les chambres à coucher. La plupart d’entre elles sont signées
Thiam B. B. Ce film est une immersion dans la pensée mouride au travers
de ces peintures, de la rencontre avec Thiam, peintre vagabond
et mystique, ainsi qu’avec les habitants de plusieurs maisons de Saint-
Louis.

Numerous house walls in Saint-Louis are covered with paintings representing
Amadou Bamba, the Master of the Mouride brotherhood. Such frescoes can also
be seen on boats, on horse-drawn carriages, on some clothes, on storefronts,
in bedrooms. Most of them were made by Thiam B. B. This film is an immersion
into the Mouride way of thinking, thanks to the paintings, to exchanges with
Thiam, a wandering, mystical painter, and with several people living in the painted
houses of Saint-Louis.

Portrait tumultueux du «Grand Z», conducteur de la locomotive Abidjan
- Ouagadougou pendant 20 ans, licencié en 1995 par la Société des
chemins de Fer du Burkina Faso, à la suite de la privatisation imposée
par la Banque Mondiale. Grand jouisseur impénitent, il fut alors terrassé
en pleine allégresse, perdit tout, et coule depuis des jours bien
sombres en attendant sa pension de retraite.
Ce film est une tragi-comédie d’Afrique. Où l’on verra errer dans les
rues poussiéreuses de Ouagadougou et les maquis huileux de Bobo-
Dioulasso, la grande silhouette fragile d’un clown blanc noir, mélancolique
et espiègle. Où l’on entendra sa langue si particulière, ses mots
brutaux et tourmentés raconter ses déboires passés et présents, ses
haines et ses espoirs. Où l’on observera les grimaces émouvantes de
cet homme de 54 ans précocement vieilli d’avoir trop bu et trop pleuré,
mais qui résiste en riant au fil du temps.

The film portrays the hectic life of the “Great Z”, an engine driver of the Abidjan-Ouagadougou
line for 20 years, laid off in 1995 by the National Railways of
Burkina Faso following the privatization imposed by the World Bank. An inveterate
hedonist to the bone, he suddenly found himself struck down as he was
experiencing pure joyfulness. He lost everything, and has since then lived a
gloomy life waiting for his retirement pension.
The film is a tragicomedy from Africa. We will see the tall and fragile silhouette
of a Black, whiteface clown, both melancholy and mischievous, wandering the
dusty streets of Ouagadougou and greasy bars in Bobo-Dioulasso. We will hear
his peculiar language, his tormented and sharp words telling his past and current
trials, his hatred and his hopes. We will watch the moving grimaces of the
54-year-old man, prematurely old from heavy drinking and crying, who stands
yet the test of time laughing.
