The Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) isa widely applied estimation technique in nonlinearregression models and many other setups. Wangand Leblanc (2005) extended the ordinary leastsquares estimation method by including in the criterionfunction the distance of the squared responsevariable to its second conditional moment. This socalledsecond-order least squares estimator (SLSE)has been shown to be asymptotically more efficientthan the ordinary least squares estimator in general. This simulation study compares the SLSE with theGMM estimator for various nonlinear regressionmodels.[MS-130]Robust Prediction Error Criterion for Pareto Modeling of Upper TailsUn critère robuste de prévision pour la modélisation Pareto des ailes supérieuresDebbie DUPUIS, HEC Montréal, Maria-Pia VICTORIA-FESER, Université de GenèveEstimation of the Pareto tail index from extreme orderstatistics is an important problem in many settings:income distributions, finance, and insurance. The upper tail of the distribution, where data aresparse, is typically fitted with a model such as thePareto model from which probabilities associatedwith extreme events are deduced. The success ofthis procedure relies heavily not only on the choiceof the estimator for the Pareto tail index but also onthe procedure used to determine the number of extremeorder statistics used for the estimation.

Theunrestricted maximum likelihood, restricted, preliminarytest, shrinkage, and positive-rule shrinkageestimators are defined for the parameters of themodel. The expressions for the bias, quadratic bias, quadratic risk and mean squared errors (mse) of theestimators are derived. The performance of the estimatorsunder different criteria and conditions arecovered. The uniform dominance of the positiveruleshrinkage estimator over the other estimatorsis noted under the quadratic risk criteria.[MS-133]On Small Area Estimation Under a Sub-area Level ModelL’estimation de petites régions à l’aide d’un modèle défini pour les sous-régionsMahmoud TORABI & J.N.K.
