Detta framhålles i Paul H. Nystrom, Fashion Merchandising, New York 1932, sid. 83 ..
Professor. I Economics
»Fashion makes men shave every day, wear shirts with collars attached, two-button sack suits,
four-In-hand ties, soft gray feli hats, trousers creased, - - - and low shoes all the year round.
It makes women wear less clothing than ever before in modern times. It ehanges the tint of
the face powder, the odor of the perfume, the wave of the hair, the position of the waist line,
the Iength of the skirt, the coIor of the hose, the height of the heels. Fashion is a stronger factor
than wear and tear in displacing automobiles, furniture, kitchen utensiles, pianos, phonographs,
radio instruments and bath tubs. Fashion causes all of this and at the same time makes people
like it. To be out of fashion is, indeed, to be out of the world.
UsefuIness, durability, fastness of coIol', purity and other similar qualities are still as fundamental
and important as they ever were, but the advances in methods of production and the
care exercised both by manufacturers and distributors in giving the consumer what he "vants.
makes careful consideration by the consumer upon these points IargeIy unnecessary.
Less than a fair degree of fastness of color in present-day textiles is inexcusabIe. A modern
automobile motor thai will not deliver its rated horsepower is unthinkable. When an established
retailer advertises fabric as all wool and a yard wide the statement is unhesitatingly accepted.
Exceptions are highly infrequent. - - - The important but ordinary qualities of goods are
now for the most part taken for granted.
But not so ,vith fashion. Here every faculty of consumer choice comes into play. Goods are
carefully studied, compared and considered, not to detern1ine what their construction is, but to
be sure that they are in the proper style. Goods may have all other qualities but if they are
not in fashion they 'will not be accepted.» (sid.
I G. Törnqvist, Distributionsvägarna
i kritisk belysning, Stockholm 1933, sid. 21, angives denna term, avseende viss tidpunkt,
2 I stort sett torde konsumtionens variationsbredd - särskilt i tiden - spela större roll inom
skoindustrien än inom de textila industrierna.
