FIG. 2 Principle of raw material related carbon
emission reduction in the production process
of Celitement compared to Portland cement. //
ABB. 2 Prinzip der rohstoffbedingten CO 2 -Einsparung
im Herstellungsprozess von Celitement verglichen mit
Portlandzement.
with water is triggered in an autoclave. This
process step results in an intermediate product
that has no cementitious characteristics yet.
The intermediate needs to be activated me-
chanically in order to produce a cement capab-
le of reacting with water and setting, which is
the crucial second process step in the produc-
tion of Celitement. At this stage, the interme-
diate created in the autoclave is converted
further by adding specially (tribochemically)
milled materials rich in Si0 2 .
This step leads to the formation of the new
cementitious material as a thin layer homoge-
neously distributed over the surface of the
silicate carrier, which also acts as a supporting
particle structure.
THE BUSINESS MODEL The composition of the
new cement and the process steps employed
for its production have been patented and re-
gistered under the “Celitement” trademark.
Aside from the company name, Celitement
also designates a complete range of innova-
tive cementitious binders. These can be dis-
tinguished by the type and quantity of silicate
carrier used and the composition of the inter-
mediate product that results from the auto-
clave process.
THE BENEFITS The major benefit of both the
manufacturing process and the product itself
is that they are very close to existing processes
in terms of the raw materials and technologies
used, which makes it possible to utilize the
expertise and technologies provided by the
cement, lime and aerated concrete industries.
Celitement products can be manufactured in
large quantities using domestic raw material
resources.
At the end of the day, Celitement is just ano-
ther, completely different route taken to-
wards creating the CSH phases known from
cement hydration. Other mineral phases that
would otherwise be required for the high-
DAS GESCHÄFTSMODELL Mittlerweile sind die Zu-
sammensetzung des neuen Zements und die Pro-
zessschritte zu seiner Herstellung durch Patente
abgesichert und unter der Bezeichnung „Celite-
ment“ geschützt. Celitement stellt neben dem
Firmennamen auch den Namen für eine ganze
Familie völlig neuer zementärer Bindemittel dar.
Diese unterscheiden sich sowohl durch Art und
Menge des verwendeten Silikatträgers als auch in
der Rezeptur des im Autoklavenprozess hergestell-
ten Vorproduktes.
DIE VORTEILE Der große Vorteil, sowohl des Her-
stellverfahrens als auch des Produktes, sind die
rohstoffliche und technologische Nähe zu be-
kannten Prozessen. Damit ist es möglich, auf Er-
fahrungen und Technik der Zement-, Kalk- und
Porenbetonindustrie zurückzugreifen. Celitemente
Zement. Eine Tonne Celitement kann eine Tonne
hochwertigen Portlandzement ersetzen und zu-
mindest gleiche, in einigen Aspekten der Dauer-
haftigkeit auch bessere, Eigenschaften aufweisen.
Der angesprochene „ökologische Rucksack“ des
Baustoffes ist dabei aber signifikant leichter.
longer needed. As a result, Celitement offers
greater simplicity in terms of its constituents
but is just as versatile as conventional ce-
ment. One tonne of Celitement can replace
one tonne of premium Portland cement whilst
providing at least identical if not improved
(regarding some aspects of durability) cha-
racteristics. However, the material’s “environ-
mental footprint” referred to above has been
reduced significantly.
WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS? From mid-2011,
a pilot plant will be available in Karlsruhe,
which will enable the production of about 100 kg
per day exactly to specification. Even the simp-
lest type of Celitement should stand its ground
against the best CEM I 52.5 R forming part of
the Schwenk range of cement grades.
Depending on the experience gained during
pilot plant operation, the commissioning of an
industrial-scale plant for the production of Ce-
litement is envisaged for 2014/15.
Celitement GmbH is determined to licence this
innovative cementitious binder to a broad ran-
ge of producers and users in the next few years.
However, the practical introduction of a new
binder will take several years according to pre-
vious experience, irrespective of its commercial
and technical potential. Regardless of its reac-
tion mechanisms, which are very similar to
conventional cement as far as hydration is con-
cerned, Celitement is not a regular cement as
defined in European standards (EN 197).
