PLENUM 2 // PROCEEDINGS
About 72 companies serve the entire Swiss
market for concrete products and precast ele-
ments. The French-speaking part of the country
is covered by the association UFPB with ten
members, which means that SwissBeton re-
aches approx. 65% of the market.
The Swiss customer base is very diverse. Some
of the particular features of the Swiss market
are due to its small-scale regional and geogra-
phical structure; other characteristics result
from the clients’ approaches, which differ sig-
nificantly.
SWISSBETON AND THE SWISS MARKET FOR CONCRETE PRODUCTS
In the French-speaking part, the Romandie, the
mentality of people is different from those in
the Italian-speaking Ticino and in the German-
speaking part of Switzerland. The geography
of the country is also important: markets such
as the Valais or the Bündnerland are self-con-
tained to a large extent.
Clients include all parties involved in construc-
tion, i.e. private individuals, building and gar-
dening contractors, architects, engineers, and
general contractors. Our members get the ma-
jor share of their contracts from construction
contractors.
The strengths of the SwissBeton members in-
clude the wide product range they offer but
also their flexibility, expertise and ability to
respond to specific customer needs, which are
particularly apparent in Switzerland. The enti-
re range is readily available – from gray 20/20
concrete pavers as a commodity product to a
custom-made designer well produced to the
architect’s specification. Established more than
20 years ago, SwissBeton is the industry fede-
ration that provides services to the manufac-
turers of concrete products. Today, it has 43
members operating 61 production sites and
employing over 1,900 people. All members are
small and medium-sized enterprises with ten
to 600 employees. Some members exclusively
manufacture either smaller, stored products
(concrete products such as pavers, slabs,
pipes, light wells, masonry blocks) or large-
scale products (precast elements such as floor
slabs, walls, façade panels, columns, beams,
stairs, noise barriers, prefabricated garages).
Others offer both of these ranges. The broad
diversification of many businesses is certain-
ly a feature typical of the Swiss market. Some
companies, both large and small, offer a very
wide product range covering everything from
landscaping to skeleton construction. The ran-
ge often includes several hundred products or
even thousands of different items.
All those contributing to the federation’s di-
verse bodies and institutions (excluding its
head office) work on a voluntary basis; they
are seconded by the members of the federa-
tion. The federation is managed by full-time
professionals working from the head office. Its
