SPECIAL CONCRETES FOR TUNNEL LINING SEGMENTS
– DESIGN AND PRACTICAL EXAMPLES
SONDERBETONE FÜR TÜBBINGE – ENTWURF UND PRAXISBEISPIELE
 Tunnel construction has progressed enor-
mously during the past 20 years. Machine-
based tunnel driving has become much more
widespread also in solid rock. Today, the shot-
crete method for the outer shell and – in most
cases – premium-quality flowable concrete for
the inner shell are normally applied only under
very complex circumstances, for example if
potential groundwater penetration or very high
water pressure levels require additional sea-
ling, or if the geology prevents machine driving.
Compared to the flowable concrete used for
the cast-in-place inner shell, which must be
highly pumpable and compactable (which is
achieved by appropriate admixtures and pow-
der constituents) and must reach early strength
levels corresponding to the respective produc-
tion cycle, concrete to be used for tunnel lining
segments must meet additional specifications.
20 Jahren enorm fortgeschritten. Der maschinelle
Vortrieb hat auch im Festgestein erhebliche Anteile
dazu gewonnen. Die Spritzbetonbauweise mit der
Außenschale aus Spritzbeton und der Innenschale
meist aus hochwertigem Fließbeton wird i. d. R.
Its consistency should be relatively high (e.g.
F4) to ensure a highly effective mixing process.
This makes it possible to optimize mixing
times. The consistency of the concrete should
then decrease already when it is poured into
the formwork. The subsequent high-intensity
vibration is applied not primarily for compac-
tion purposes. Rather, this process should pre-
vent surface voids also in the area of the groo-
ves that are to accommodate the seals so as
to avoid costly rework of the concrete surface.
A low consistency is desirable for preventing
concrete segregation during the high-intensity
vibration process. The selection of appropriate
plasticizers is crucial in this regard.
Finally, the concrete should quickly reach ap-
propriate strength levels to enable formwork
stripping. The final strength level is reached
after only about two or three weeks – the tun-
nel segment is usually subjected to the grea-
test forces during installation. A concrete mix
design minutely tailored to this situation and
a corresponding curing and storage scheme
ensure that the precast units actually meet the
defined specifications.
