Wirkbau
So
steht der unmittelbar am Chemnitz-
Ufer gelegene Industriekomplex heute
modellhaft für den Umgang der Stadt
mit ihrem industriellen Erbe. Auch in
Zukunft soll der Standort vielfältig und
heterogen weiterentwickelt werden.
and the café, have set up here in recent years, and the in-house restaurant adds to the feeling
of being one big family. The Wirkbau The striking Art Deco architecture of its bell tower
ensures the Wirkbau can be seen from a long way away. Along with the distinctive brick
tower, the imposing factory buildings continue to bear witness to the self-confidence of the
former owners, who made a name for themselves here from 1883 onwards operating Germany’s
biggest factory for stocking making machines. For over a hundred years, until 1993,
the Wirkbau was a textile machine production site. After extensive historical restoration,
the complex once again began to attract people with vision. The space that in earlier times
was filled with the tireless thumping of stocking making machines has expanded over the
years and is once again being brought to life by craftsmen, small businesses, artists, restaurants,
associations and educational institutions. And the industrial complex right on the
banks of the Chemnitz river is now a model example of the city’s engagement with its industrial
heritage. There are plans to develop the site further in future, making it even more diverse
and varied.
