Eine herausragende Adresse für Bühnenunterhaltung ist zugleich die
Stadthalle Chemnitz, architektonisches Highlight der Stadt und ein
Komplex aus zwei Veranstaltungssälen, in denen Gastspiele aus Musik,
Comedy, Tanz, Musical und die Sinfoniekonzerte der Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie
zu erleben sind.

Tauber which achieved the greatest renown beyond the local region.
The bombing raid of 5 March 1945 put paid to all that, however. The
Opera House burned down completely – not until the 1950s could
plays once again be performed, following conversion and extension
work. A few decades later, comprehensive reconstruction became
unavoidable. It was ceremonially reopened in 1992 and has been
Chemnitz’s premier venue for opera, operetta, ballet and concerts
ever since.
The Theatre, in turn, received a new stage in 1980, which increasingly
became a springboard for many young actors and directors who
are still amongst the most well-known in the country today – including
Oscar winner Ulrich Mühe and the Enfant Terrible of the Berlin
theatre scene, Frank Castorf.
In the 1980s, a professional cabaret ensemble was also founded in
Karl-Marx-Stadt. After reunification, it found a permanent performance
venue at the Market Hall.
In recent years, private theatres and venues for independent groups
have also appeared on the scene, most notably the Fritz Theatre
and the Weltecho cultural centre, which, amongst other things, have
fostered the establishment of the KAMMERMACHEN festival of contemporary
theatre, dance, music and sound art. Not forgetting the
Komplex Theatre on Zietenstraße, a space for experimental theatre
and performance art.
Stadthalle Chemnitz is another outstanding venue for stage entertainment.
The complex, made up of two event halls, is one of the city’s
architectural highlights. Here, audiences can enjoy performances
by touring musicians, comedians, dancers and musicals, as well as
symphony concerts by the Robert Schumann Philharmonie orchestra.
