Tips for driving off-road
Mountainous terrain
Follow the line of fall on slopes and
steep inclines.
Shift the transfer case to LOW before
driving on extreme uphilland and downhill
gradients ( page 170).
Engage the differential locks if necessary
( page 174).
Observe the warnings for off-road driving
( page 269).
Drive slowly.
Accelerate carefully and make sure
that the wheels are gripping.
Avoid high engine speeds.
Select the automatic transmission shift
range that is appropriate for the uphill
gradient.
Maximum gradient climbing ability:
The maximum gradient climbing ability is
80% if the transfer case is shifted to the
LOW transfer range.
If the load on the front axle is reduced
when pulling away on a mountain slope,
the front wheels have a tendency to
spin. 4-ETS recognises this and brakes
the wheels accordingly. The rear wheel
torque is increased and it is easier to
pull away.
