Jump-starting<br />

Jump-starting i<br />

If your vehicle's battery is discharged, the<br />

engine can be started from another vehicle<br />

using jump leads.<br />

Observe the following points:<br />

Jump-starting must only be performed<br />

when the engine and catalytic converter<br />

are cold.<br />

Do not start the engine if the battery<br />

has frozen. Let the battery thaw first.<br />

Only use batteries with the same nominal<br />

voltage for jump-starting.<br />

Only use jump leads that are protected<br />

against polarity reversal and which<br />

have an adequate cross-section and insulated<br />

battery terminal clamps.<br />

You can obtain jump leads with polarity<br />

reversal protection, e.g. from any<br />

<strong>Mercedes</strong>-Benz Service Centre.<br />

Only jump-start the battery in the engine<br />

compartment.<br />

Avoid repeated and lengthy starting attempts.<br />

Never start the vehicle using a rapid<br />

battery charger.<br />

Do not lean over the battery while the engine<br />

is being jump-started.<br />

Avoid creating sparks. Keep naked flames<br />

away from the battery and do not smoke.<br />

Comply with safety precautions and special<br />

protective measures when handling the battery<br />

( page 372).<br />

Make sure that the two vehicles do not<br />

touch.<br />

Apply the parking brake and move the<br />

selector lever to P.<br />

Switch all electrical consumers off.<br />
