Appendix C SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS HELD IN SUPPORT OF THE STUDY SEMINAR IN EDINBURGH: INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY FOR ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE – SYNERGIES, GAPS, CONFLICTS AND INCENTIVES On 5 September 2008 the Royal Commission hosted a seminar at the BMA Scotland Offices, in support of the adaptation study. The seminar was attended by over 30 participants including Members of the Commission and Secretariat, and officials from both the Northern Ireland and Scottish Governments, as well as non-governmental organisations and industry. Participants discussed a wide range of topics, including the differences between adaptation in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, and the need to make adaptation relevant to people both as individuals and as part of institutions. Mark Williams Scottish Water Ruth Wolstenholme SNIFFER SEMINAR IN READING: INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY FOR ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE – SYNERGIES, GAPS, CONFLICTS AND INCENTIVES On 18 November 2008 the Royal Commission hosted a seminar at the Innovation Centre in Reading to gather views from interested parties relevant to deciding the scope of the adaptation study. The seminar involved around 50 participants, including officials from UK governments, academics and researchers, and representatives from non-governmental organisations and industry. Participants worked in small groups to identify a range of issues relating to the three chosen exemplar areas (biodiversity, nature conservation and protected areas; sea level and coastal zones; freshwater) and then explored the roles of institutional actors within these areas in greater detail.
