ofthe south porch of Malmesbury Abbey, c. 1160. The figures are almost life<br />

size. On the right St. Peter can be identified by his large key. The figures are<br />

uncouth, the postures naif, but the group has the strong Hnear rhythm that<br />

is one of the most characteristic qualities of English twelfth/century art<br />

b. Detail from the Gloucester candlestick in the Victoria and Albert<br />

Museum. The candlestick is in<br />

gilt bell/metal and 23J in. high. It was<br />

given to Gloucester by Abbot Peter between 1104 and 1113. It may be<br />

taken as a small/scale model of the<br />

large paschal candlesticks which are<br />

known to have existed in many of the<br />

greater churches
