hagglers eventually—whether they want to or not.<br />
Alignment<br />
There is morally very lile difference between the bakad and their<br />
primitive cousins. A haggler’s primary interest is his own well-being,<br />
and he does whatever necessary to come out ahead. Most bakad are<br />
neutral evil, although player characters can be of any alignment.<br />
Bakad Lands<br />
The bakad do have not communities of their own. Instead, they live<br />
in prosperous cities where money abounds, such as Dreij. The bakad<br />
live almost anywhere, but the city of Nolmedron forbids access to<br />
hagglers without good cause.<br />
Religion<br />
Gamia is the primary deity of the hagglers. The bakad believe<br />
Gamia redirected them from their<br />
Bakad Blessings<br />
The following are example blessings the bakad<br />
use when completing deals.<br />
“May Gamia’s wheel turn your way.”<br />
“May your purse overflow and your<br />
shadow not fall across nimble fingers.”<br />
“By Gamia’s will, let all your coppers<br />
be tarnished silver.”<br />
“Go with gold, blessed of Gamia.”<br />
“May your house be blessed and showered<br />
with gold coin.”<br />

gold and goods. Because of this, all<br />
hagglers complete their bargains<br />
with a short blessing to their patron<br />
goddess. To a lesser extent, the<br />
bakad pay tribute to other goblin<br />
deities, more out of a sense of<br />
tradition than anything else. Some<br />
bakad consider Akrasia to be a<br />
manifestation of Gamia, and so<br />
worship her as well.<br />
Divine Heritage<br />
The bakad may have divine heritage from the following gods:<br />
Akrasia, Biddethomia, Dooned, Gamia, Grijj, Jestale, Mikret, Podenmol,<br />
Shivanos , Tennefron, and Zackria.<br />
Language<br />
Bakad speak Goblin among themselves or Bakad (Haggler), a secret<br />
racial language of twitches and facial gestures, and Common.<br />
Common, of course, is the language of trade in many lands.<br />
Chapter Seven: Races<br />
Names<br />
The most important aspect of a bakad’s name is his merchant house,<br />
which supplants the position occupied by the tribe among other<br />
goblins, and thus it is placed before their given names. Given names<br />
retain the guural harshness of their ancestors.<br />
Male Names<br />
Bikn, Fizz, Gizlor, Nek, Quin, Tanke, and Xyn are common male<br />
names.<br />
Female Names<br />
Biik, Cidina, Kkaa, Liddia, Niis, and Yeene are common female<br />
names.<br />
House Names<br />
Ardorn (“Clothweaver”), Diffdek (“Soulseller”), Garlnne’mom (“Taker<br />
of Dead Man’s Teeth”), Kiclin Boke Zyxxen (“Seller of Water to Fish”),<br />
and Uklenbore (“Sweet Claimer”) are all typical house names.<br />
Adventurers<br />
Bakad adventurers are practically unknown; most hagglers<br />
desperately avoid anything more exciting than the pursuit of the allmighty<br />
gold piece. Those few who do end up embroiled in adventure<br />
tend to be rogues or bards, careers that take good advantage of<br />
their skills and deviousness. Haggler warriors are extremely rare,<br />
with most such bakad being fighters, whereas paladins and clerics<br />
are almost unheard of. Bakad sorcerers and wizards are even less<br />
common, thanks to their innate ineptitude with arcane magic.<br />
Bakad (Haggler) Racial Traits<br />
• –2 Strength, –2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, +2 Charisma.<br />
Physically unimpressive, the hagglers are as quick with their<br />
charm as they are with their considerable guile.<br />
• Small: As small creatures, hagglers gain a +1 size bonus to<br />
Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on aack rolls, and a +4 size<br />
bonus on Hide checks. Bakad use smaller weapons than<br />
humans use, and their liing and carrying limits are threequarters<br />
of those of a Medium character.<br />
• Haggler base speed is 30 feet; they are very quick for Small<br />
creatures.<br />
• Low-Light Vision: Hagglers can see twice as far as a human in<br />
poor illumination. They retain the ability to distinguish color<br />
and detail under these conditions.<br />
• +2 racial bonus to Diplomacy and Gather Information checks.<br />
• +4 racial bonus to any ability or skill check involving the<br />
buying or selling of goods.<br />
• +2 to Will saving throws against any kind of mind-affecting<br />
magic.<br />
• Magical Ineptitude: Hagglers have a natural (although<br />
unexplained) handicap when it comes to arcane magic. Any<br />
spell a haggler casts has a 10% chance of failure. This stacks<br />
with the chance of arcane spell failure from armor. In addition,<br />
they take a –2 racial penalty to Concentration and Use Magic<br />
Device checks.<br />
• Automatic Languages: Bakad, Common, and Goblin. Bonus<br />
Languages: Any (other than secret languages).<br />
• Favored Class: Rogue. A multiclass haggler’s rogue class does<br />
not count when determining whether he takes an XP penalty for<br />
multiclassing (for details, see rules for multiclassing in the PHB).<br />
• Allowable Divine Heritage: Akrasia, Biddethomia, Dooned,<br />
Gamia, Grijj, Jestale, Mikret, Poden-mol, Shivanos, Tennefron,<br />
and Zackria.
