4x1 inches, hygrophanous when growing. When wet, grey; when dry,<br />

white. Edge thin. Surface snow-white, and pubescent (Fig. 645 X6)<br />

when dry; when wet, grey, and pubescence does not show. Flesh<br />

soft, firm when fresh, zonate in drying. Pores (Fig. 646 X6) minute,<br />

round. Spores subglobose, 3^ to 4 mic., guttulate.<br />

This is our most frequent, white species around Cincinnati, growing<br />

late in the season on very rotten logs. It is quite hygrophanous.<br />

It is similar to Polyporus spumeus excepting in habits, and has much<br />
