pileate development and is surely not a Poria, as compiled in Saccardo.<br />

Neither can it be classed as Irpex, as has been proposed.<br />

MKRULIUS CASTANEUS (Fig. 761), FROM J. UMEMURA,<br />

JAPAN. Resupinate, closely adnate, no distinct margin, uniform,<br />

dark chestnut brown. Hymenium meruloid with large, shallow<br />

pores (Fig. 762 enlarged). Tissue of deeply colored, rigid hyphae.<br />

Hymenium layer about 150 mm. thick, subhyaline, consisting of<br />

intricate, rigid, subhyaline hyphae, with free projecting ends. Spores<br />

(conidial ?) globose, 3-5 mic. smooth, hyaline. Basidia not found.<br />

The dried specimen might be classed as a shallow pored Poria,<br />

but when soaked out it is decidedly meruloid. It may have a name<br />

somewhere as a Poria, but if it has I do not know it. Received from<br />

J. Umemura, Japan, No. 120 (twice) and No. 134.<br />

STEREUM ALBIDUM (Fig. 763), FROM A. YASUDA,<br />

JAPAN. Pileus white, thin, spathulate or reniform, with a short,<br />

lateral stipe, 3-4 x 1-2 cm. Surface smooth,<br />

^HF hyaline hyphae. Spores globose, 3 mic.,<br />

This belongs to Section 9 and is the only<br />

V species in the section that remains white in<br />

jj|^ drying. It is quite close to Stereum dia-<br />

.jfglijip phanum (in Section 2), which however, is<br />

always infundibuliform. The spores de-<br />

scribed may be only the conidial spores, for<br />

I find also large (10 mic.) globose, minutely rough spores, which may<br />

be the basidial spores, but I take them to be accidental.<br />
