LAGUNA, (1) pond, lake (lago), lagoon, marsh, " deposito natural de
agua, generalmente dulce y por lo comun de menores dimensiones que
in Span. Am. practically synonymous with lago, see
el lago " (Acad.) ;
cienaga(l) and (2), marisma ;
1. de la brea, see chapopote ; (2) an
uneven country, full of marshes (Velazquez).
LAGUNE, Mex. a small lake (lago).
LAJA, thin flat stone [lancha (1)], bed, layer or sheet, see u. cobija (2),
comp. losa (1) ; estructura en lajas, geol. flaggy structure ; 1. chavera,
Cartagena, Sp. highly decomposed schist (pizarra) used for (Moncada).

LAMA, (1) dust or ore in mines (Velazquez) ; Pachuca, Hid. Mex. ore
occurring in the veins in a fine state of powder, generally much more
common on the walls, then forming guardas (1) ; (2) mech. prep,
slimes (Ger. Schlamm) ; Mex. in the patio process, slimes or ore ground
into fine paste by the tahonas or arrastres (3), see u. barro (1), u.
jalsontle, lamero (1) and (2), lodo, tepestate, comp. u. relave ; (3) moist
clay used by miners for sticking candles to their hats, etc. ; (4) Anda-
lucia, Sp. fine sand [arenilla (1)] used for mortar ; (5) Tipuani, Bol.
rough pebble-beds forming a false bed-rock to gold-bearing alluvial
deposits, and known locally as " lama-benches " (M. Frochot), see
roca (7), comp. binches.
LAMERO, Mex. (1) slime-pit, walled receiver or circular walled space
for the ground slimes or lamas (2), syn. cajetes ;
in the patio process,
after grinding, the ore is deposited in the lameros (1), where, by evaporation,
the lamas acquire the proper consistency ; from the lameros
the lama is carried to the patio, where it is made into a heap [see lamero
(2)] ; (2) lama (2) merely thickened by admixture with sal tierra ;
when magistral and mercury have been added to the mud-heap it is
called a torta, comp. u. monton (1).
LAMINA, (1) thin plate or sheet of metal, see chapa (1), placa, plancha
(2) and (3) ; 1. de hierro, sheet-iron ; laminas, gold-mill, copper plates ;
(2) gold-mill, screen, see compuerta (4) ; (3) scale of gold ; (4) 1. de
pizarra, slab or plate of slate, a slate, comp. laja.
LAMINADOR, met. rolling-mill.
LAMINAR, to roll or beat metal into sheets.
LAMOSO (adj. slimy), (1) lamosos, Asientos, Aguascalientes, Mex.
copper ores in which clay and jaboncillo (1) or steatite abound as the
matrix (Ramirez), comp. duros, pastosos, yesosos ; (2) Mex. in the patio
process, ore-mud which is very sticky and clayey, comp. u. seco, ca.
