LODOSO, SA, adj. muddy, slimy, syn. limoso, sa.<br />

LOMA, (1) top. any rise <strong>of</strong> ground up to 100 m. or 150 m. (Barcena) ;<br />

a hillock in a plain, sometimes gold-bearing, comp. cerro (1) colina,<br />

playa (1) ; (2) slope, syn. falda (1) comp. pendiente (1).<br />

LONA, canvas ; 1. para encerados, tarpaulin ; see encerado (2).<br />

LONGANAS, Guan. Mex. cylinders <strong>of</strong> clay containing rich ore, or long<br />

sausage-like pieces <strong>of</strong> ore which the miners stole by sticking them in<br />

the anus (Humboldt and Tilmann).<br />

LONGITUD, (1) length (<strong>of</strong> a gallery, etc.) ; (2)geogr. longitude ; (3) surv.<br />

departure (easting or westing), comp. latitud (4).<br />

LORIGA, nave-band or hoop, surrounding hub or nave [cubo (3)] <strong>of</strong> a<br />

cart-wheel, comp. llanta (1).<br />

LORITOS, Asturias, Sp. holes or vacant spaces left in the filling or stowing<br />

(Molina), see relleno (3).<br />

LOSA, (1) flat stone, flag-stone, flag, see cobija (2), comp. laja ;<br />

(2) Coquimbo, Chile, a mass <strong>of</strong> rock, about 20 feet thick, formed <strong>of</strong><br />

fragments <strong>of</strong> recent shells, with a few whole ones, and with small<br />

pebbles firmly cemented together (C. Darwin), see conglomerado.<br />

Guan. Mex. extensive quarries (canteras)<br />

<strong>of</strong> sandstone (arenisca), very consistent and <strong>of</strong> beautiful colours, used<br />

LOSERO, a quarry for losa (1) ;<br />

for building purposes (Ramirez) ; a grit near the base <strong>of</strong> the bufas<br />

[consisting <strong>of</strong> rhyolitic tuff], containing fragments <strong>of</strong> crystals <strong>of</strong><br />

felspar, and resting on a coarser grit <strong>of</strong> a red colour (St. Clair Duport) ;<br />

Humboldt calls it felspathic conglomerate, and says it is composed <strong>of</strong><br />

grains <strong>of</strong> quartz, small fragments <strong>of</strong> slate, and crystals <strong>of</strong> felspar in a<br />

ferruginous clay cement ;<br />

it is divided up into very thin leaves (hojas) ;<br />

it is a recent argillaceous sandstone the new dam <strong>of</strong> Guanajuato,<br />

capacity 6,000,000 gallons, is made <strong>of</strong> this rock, called cantera.<br />

LOZA, (1) pottery ; (2) Peru, alluv. m. bed-rock, see roca (6).<br />

LUCHADERO, mech. neck or journal (portion <strong>of</strong> shaft which rests in<br />

the bearings), syn. cuello (2), manga (5) del eje, peon (2).<br />

LUMBRE, piedra de 1., (1) flint, see pedernal ; (2) firestone, see tizar.<br />

LUMBRERA (skylight), (1) air- or adit-shaft ; shaft for ventilating<br />

tunnels, etc., see u. pozo (2), comp. sopladero ; (2) a rise, see con-<br />

tracielo (1) ; (3) Mex. port-hole in furnace (Dwight), see horno (2),<br />

ojo (14).<br />

LUZ, (1) light ; 1. descubierta, c.m. naked light ; 1. de arco, el. arc light ;<br />

1. incandescente, el. incandescent light ; (2) clearance <strong>of</strong> a piston ;<br />

(3) port <strong>of</strong> a cylinder, etc. (Fr. lumiere) ; (4) span <strong>of</strong> a bridge, syn. ojo<br />

(12), tramo (4) ; span <strong>of</strong> an arch (arco), syn. apertura de boveda ;<br />

(5) mech. prep, mesh, see malla ; (6) section <strong>of</strong> a shaft, well, etc., " de<br />

una 1. de 2 por 3 m."<br />
