MINING TERMS<br />

ABACA, (1) the Musa textilis <strong>of</strong> the banana family, a native <strong>of</strong> the Philippines<br />

; (2) inner fibre <strong>of</strong> (1) or Manila-hemp (canamo de Manila or<br />

giiembe), comp. cabulla (2) ; (3) rope or any fabric made <strong>of</strong> (2).<br />

ABACO, trough (artesa) in which ores are washed, particularly gold (Acad.),<br />

comp. gamella (2).<br />

ABAJADOR, (1) one who carries tools to miners working in shafts, etc.,<br />

syn. fierrero, comp. atajador, barrenero, buque, hatero, pepe, piquetero,<br />

rata, zorra ; (2) stable-boy.<br />

ABAJO ! lower ! (signal for letting down the kibble, etc.) syn. Pachuca,<br />

Hid. Mex. cachani ! comp. arriba ! sota !<br />
