PERITO, (1) Span. Am. scientific or practical arbitrator or expert ; in
Mex. must be a graduate, or, at least, practical ; the peritos measure
a skilful workman.

PERNO (pin), (1) large nail or spike, see clavazon (2), clavo (1), espiga (1) ;
(2) bolt, see cerrojo ; (3) mech. joint-pin, crank-pin, see clavija (1),
pasador.
PEROL, Ant. Col. small iron pan in which some sort of pestle works,
used for grinding and amalgamating pyrites, comp. mortero (3).
PERPENDICULAR, (1) Mex. the part of a working-place [labor (2)]
below the miner (Gamboa) ; (2) Col. the vertical post of an arrastre
(3), see peon (3).
PERRO, (1) p. de mina = Ger. Hund, Fr. chien de mine, comp. carro
(2) ; (2) mech. gib, syn. contraclavija [see u. clavija (1)], see u. chaveta
and pasador.
PERSONAL, Fr. personnel.
PERTENENCIA, orig. in Sp. a plot or set of ground 300 x 200 varas
allotted to the discoverer of a lode, a post was erected at the corner
of each pertenencia, which had to be kept whitewashed ; in Mex.
according to the old Ordenanzas, 200 varas on the strike of the vein
by 112vV to 200 varas in width, according to the dip, but now in both
countries 1 pertenencia of a vein mine = 1 hectare or 100 m. square,
in Peru = 2 hectares or 200 m. long by 100 m. wide, in the Arg. =
300 m. x 200 m. to 300 m. according to the dip, in Colombia = 600 m.
x 240 m., a vein mine having three of these. In Mexico 1 pertenencia
of gold-placers and irregular mineral deposits = 300 m. x 300 m. ;
in Peru, coal-placers, etc., = 4 hectares ; equiv. Port. (Brazil) data
(2).
PESADOR, weigher of ore, coke, etc., weigh-master.
PESCANTE, (1) crane, see grua ; (2) p. de hierro,
pump, set-off, or appliance used in joining pumprods
to main rods, see Fig. 61, comp. taco (9), u.
tapajunta.
