ARO, (1) hoop of wood or metal (see argolla) ; arcs, hoops used in hoop
or bridle timbering (Ger. Biigelzimmerung) ; (2) iron staple, see cerra-
dero (1) ; (3) rim of a pulley, see u. anillo (6) ; (4) a. de sujecion, pump,
staple, gland and nuts, used in securing a set-off or off-set [brazo (2)],
see bomba (1).

AROZA, master-smelter (Ponce de Leon) ;
foreman in ironworks or forges
(Velazquez).
ARPEO, timb. hitch (Ponce de Leon), see huida (4).
ARQUEADAS, branches which form an arch and are again
united to the
vein.
ARQUERO, hierro a., see hierro (1) cellar.
ARRANCACLAVOS, nail-puller ; it generally consists of a clawed crowbar,
see pata (2).
ARRANCAR, (1) to break ground, win or get, syn. apalancar, derribar,
to break down

ARRANCASONDAS, bor. tool extractor (e.g., crow's-foot, bell, bc-che or

ARRANCATUBOS, bor. tube-extractor, equiv. Fr. crochet d'arrachage,
Ger. Rohrenheber, Rohrenzieher, see naveta.
ARRANQUE, (1) breaking ground, winning or getting, syn. Peru, ataque
(3), derribo, Mex. tumbe, equiv. Fr. abatage. NOTE. It is sometimes
equivalent to Fr. depilage, e.g., a. segun la direccion = depilage en long or
en chassant, a. segun la inclination depilage en travers or en montant ;
see desmonte (5), despojo, comp. disfrute. A. mecanico, rock-drilling by
machinery ; trabajo de a., working-place ; (2) arranques, mas. springers
or reins of an arch (arco) or the voussoirs which rest on the imposts,
abutments or piers ;
in a rampant arch (as frequently used in mining)
the upper springer = cabeceadero (2), and the lower one = rafa (1).
ARRASTRA, see arrastre (3).
ARRASTRADOR, (1) trammer, see carretero (1) ; (2) met. slag-pot puller
(Dwight).
ARRASTRAR (to drag along the ground), (1) to haul or convey, see
arrastre (1) ; (2) to unite as veins and form one ; (3) a. el agua, pump,
to almost completely exhaust the water in a sump or working (Chism),
to fork.

a. interior, underground haulage,
see u. rastra (1), transporte ; a. mecanico, see traction ; (2) slope (talud)
or inclination of the sides of a shaft, etc. ; tiro (1) de a., inclined shaft ;
a. de un criadero, foot-wall or floor of an ore-deposit, see bajo (3) ; (3)
molina de a. (often incorrectly spelt arrastra), a drag-mill in Mexico
arrastres are commonly driven by mules, elsewhere by water, or even by
steam or electricity, syn. Nicaragua, molinate, comp. maray ; a. de
cuchara, spoon-arrastre or tahona, or one driven by a rough impactwheel,
the blades of which = cucharas (5) ; a. de marca, a large arrastre ;
