timbering <strong>of</strong> an oval-shaped gallery formed either <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> short<br />

logs with their axes generally at right- angles to the excavations, or <strong>of</strong><br />

longer ones parallel to the same, syn. armadura (1) en boveda, equiv.<br />

BRASA, (1) red-hot coal, etc., see ascua ; (2) Almaden, Sp. met. the<br />

distillation <strong>of</strong> the mercury by the combustion <strong>of</strong> the sulphur in the ore,<br />

forming the second stage <strong>of</strong> the process, when firing is discontinued<br />

(Schnabel).<br />

BRASCA, met. brasque, a mixture <strong>of</strong> charcoal powder and damped refrac-<br />

tory earth which is rammed down (apisonado) in the bottom [reposadero<br />

(3)] <strong>of</strong> the crucible <strong>of</strong> a blast-furnace with iron tools called espetones (2)<br />

(Ramirez) ; in tin-smelting, brasca is made <strong>of</strong> four parts <strong>of</strong> charcoal<br />

powder to one <strong>of</strong> clay.<br />
