BINCHES, Arg. The gold-bearing conglomerate composed chiefly <strong>of</strong><br />

pebbles <strong>of</strong> Silurian grauwacke and slate is further characterised by<br />

cubical crystals <strong>of</strong> pyrites locally termed binches, the abundance <strong>of</strong><br />

which is regarded by the miners as an indicator <strong>of</strong> the richness <strong>of</strong> the<br />

conglomerate (this, however, is not invariably a safe guide), and by<br />

the presence <strong>of</strong> an extremely fine magnetic black sand which is always<br />

found in the washings to accompany the gold " (V. Novarese). See pirita,<br />

lama (5). NOTE. The above word appears to be a corruption<br />

<strong>of</strong> Engl. benches.<br />

BISMUT, BISMUTO, (1) bismuth ; (2) bismuto-blenda, eulytite,<br />

an ore from Chihuahua, Mex., containing from 9 to 29 per cent,<br />

<strong>of</strong> bismuth, and associated with copper pyrites, galena and blende<br />

(the last two occasionally). NOTE. According to Dana, eulytite is a<br />

bismuth s'licate from Johanngeorgenstadt.<br />

BITES, Ant. Col. slime produced by the grinding or stamping <strong>of</strong> ore, see<br />

also fango, lama, lodo, comp. mamaja (2).<br />
