MACANA, (1) wooden weapon <strong>of</strong> war <strong>of</strong> the Indians, shaped<br />

like a<br />

scimitar in 1554 the Indians <strong>of</strong> Buritica, Col. worked gold veins by<br />

means <strong>of</strong> macanas and coas (V. Restrepo), the latter was a kind <strong>of</strong> hoe ;<br />

(2) Col. split wood, made from the trunks <strong>of</strong> palm-trees and tree-ferns,<br />

used for fencing and other purposes ; it is very hard and durable, the<br />

Indian blow-gun (cerbatana) is made <strong>of</strong> macana (Uribe).<br />

MACEO, Mex. stamping and crushing as distinguished from pulverising<br />

(pulverization), comp. granceo.<br />

MACERO, Mex. man in charge <strong>of</strong> stamping and crushing (maceo).<br />

MACETA, (1) handle <strong>of</strong> some kinds <strong>of</strong> tools, see astil (1) ; (2) two-clawed<br />

hammer, see martillo ; (3) hammer with head <strong>of</strong> two equal faces and<br />

a short handle, used by stone-cutters for striking the chisels (Acad.).<br />
