later, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> De Hellenistica Commentarius (Commentary on <strong>the</strong> Greek Language,<br />

1643), Salmasius concurred with Elichmann that German, Greek, <strong>and</strong> Persian<br />

derived ‘from <strong>the</strong> same orig<strong>in</strong>’ (ab eadem orig<strong>in</strong>e venientia). 27 If <strong>the</strong> undated letter<br />

of Boxhorn to Salmasius is of a much later date than 1637, it could be that<br />

Boxhorn followed <strong>in</strong> Salmasius’s (sic Elichmann’s) footsteps <strong>in</strong>stead of <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r way around.<br />

However, if Boxhorn cannot be credited for <strong>the</strong> discovery of <strong>the</strong> Scythian<br />

orig<strong>in</strong> of German, Greek, <strong>and</strong> Persian, he did take this field of language comparison<br />

to a new level. As mentioned before, Boxhorn’s Scythian <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bedied<strong>in</strong>ge attracted questions that appeared <strong>in</strong> a pamphlet pr<strong>in</strong>ted by Van der<br />

Boxe. 28 Boxhorn reacted to <strong>the</strong>se questions with a 112 page long treatise, <strong>the</strong><br />

Antwoord (Answer, 1647). 29 In short, <strong>the</strong> purpose of <strong>the</strong> Antwoord is <strong>the</strong> same<br />

as <strong>the</strong> Bedied<strong>in</strong>ge: to prove that <strong>the</strong> Germanic languages <strong>and</strong> Persian derive<br />

from <strong>the</strong> same common orig<strong>in</strong>, Scythian. There are, however, some important<br />

differences between <strong>the</strong> Bedied<strong>in</strong>ge <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Antwoord, <strong>and</strong> between Boxhorn’s<br />

Scythian <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>and</strong> that of Elichmann <strong>and</strong> Salmasius. First, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Antwoord<br />

Boxhorn does not limit <strong>the</strong> discussion to <strong>the</strong> Germanic languages <strong>and</strong> Persian,<br />

but also takes Lat<strong>in</strong>, Greek, Old English, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baltic <strong>and</strong> Slavic languages<br />

<strong>in</strong>to consideration <strong>and</strong> connects <strong>the</strong>m to each o<strong>the</strong>r. In <strong>the</strong> Orig<strong>in</strong>um Gallicarum<br />

liber he would draw Celtic <strong>in</strong>to this picture. 30 At <strong>the</strong> same time Boxhorn,<br />

who counted Dutch among <strong>the</strong> Germanic languages, turns aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> ‘Belgicophile’<br />

<strong>the</strong>ories of Becanus <strong>and</strong> Schrieckius, <strong>and</strong> he ridicules <strong>the</strong>ir ‘twaddles’<br />

(beusel<strong>in</strong>ghen), claim<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y had been too bl<strong>in</strong>d to see <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

been absolutely clueless about <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> outs of <strong>the</strong> matter. 31<br />
