of Seychelles has proved effective in the<br />

conservation of isl<strong>and</strong> birds threatened<br />

The biota of continental isl<strong>and</strong>s,<br />

although lacking some continental<br />

plants <strong>and</strong> animals, are seldom as<br />

impoverished as those of oceanic<br />

isl<strong>and</strong>s. However, they often harbor<br />

relict endemic species that have been<br />

extinguished on nearby continents,<br />

The “inhabited” isl<strong>and</strong>s shown in Table II-14 are distinguished from isl<strong>and</strong>s where<br />

parties of scientists, meteorologists, or military personnel may reside, but do not<br />

normally raise families, <strong>and</strong> rely on imported supplies of food <strong>and</strong> fuel <strong>for</strong> their<br />

sustenance.<br />
