JOURNAL OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL MUTAGEN SOCIETY
INSTRUCTIC/aS TO AUTHORS
ENVIRONMENTAL AND MOLECULAR MUTAGENESIS
Publishes original researG'F papers on mutation and mutation-related
topics; in addition, there are review articles on topics of
brood interest pertaining to mutagenesis and discussions of issues
of social concern.
Among the topics covered ore : mechanisms of mutogenesis, environmental
modification of DNA, repair of DNA damage, genetic
and cytogenetic methods forstudying genetic damage, mutogenicity
screening, methods for estimating mutogenic hazards to humans,
and epidemiological studies relating to environmental mutagens
.
The study of environmental mutagens is a multidisciplinary activity .
The journal is intended for investigators in such fields as toxicology,
genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, radiation biology, and
basic cancer research, as well as other areas of biology, chemistry,
and medicine that deal with mutagenesis .
Manuscripts and all editorial correspondence should be sent by
first-class mail, or air, to the editor : Dr . R .J . Albertini, Vermont Regional
Cancer Center, 1 South Prospect Street, Burlington, VT
05401, USA. The manuscript must be typed, double-spaced, on
one side of white bond paper, approximately 81fi" by 11", with
generous margins . Begin each section on a separate page . Number
all pages in sequence beginning with the title page . Submit the
original and three copies of all elements arranged in the following
order:
TITLE PAGE: This should contain an informative title, the names
and affiliotions of all authors, the name and address for reprint
requests, and a short running title .
ABSTRACT : This should be a factual condensation of the entire
work and include statements of the problem, method of study, results,
and conclusion . The abstract may not exceed 250 words .
KEY WORDS: Supply a list of three to six key words (not in the
title) that will adequately index the subject matter of the article .
TEXT: Text should follow the format : Introduction, Material!`and
Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, and References .
Authors whose "first" language is not English should arrange for
their manuscript to be written in idiomatic English prior to submission
. Authors may use either English or American Style ; for the
former, consult the Oxford Shorter Dictionary; for the latter, consult
Merriam-Webster's . All unusual abbreviations must be defined
either at first mention or in a footnote. All measurements must be
in metric units . All possible areas of misinterpretation such as differentiation
between letters and numbers (letter I and number 1,
letter a and number 0) should be marked on the manuscript by
means of marginal notations .
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This section of the paper must be
sufficiently detailed to permit other scientists to evaluate the work
critically and to repeat the experiments . The source of all chemicals,
all unusual supplies, the organisms used, and any unusual
apparatus should be given . Strain designations and relevant information
on genotypes should be clearly specified . Any deviation
from published methods should be given. If reference is made to
o manuscript in press, a thesis, or a publication of limited distribution,
three copies of the materials and methods from that manuscript
or publication should be included for use by the reviewers .
Authors should provide details of plant growth conditions or animal
husbandry, such as food, bedding, light cycles, et cetero . Details
of culture conditions and media should be provided for in vitro
work. If in doubt about whether or not to include any technical
detail, include it .
REFERENCES: In the text, cite references by the name and date
system. When there are more than two authors, use the first name
and et ol (with period) . In the final list they should be arranged
alphabetically, and chronologically for more than one reference
with the same authorship . Use a letter suffix if more than one author
reference is for the same year . Begin each reference with the
names of all authors . For references to journals, give titles of articles
in full, abbreviate journal names according to Index Medicus,
and provide inclusive pagination . For references to books, include
all authors' names, year of publication, chapter title (if any), editor
http://legacy.library.ucsf.edu/tid/clb93d00/pdf
(if any), book title, city of publication, and publisher's name . In the
following examples, note the punctuation . Do not use all capitals .
Do not underline. '
TABLES : Each table must have a self-explanatory title, be numbered
in order of appearance with Roman numerals, and be
keyed into the text .
LEGENDS : A descriptive legend must accompany each illustration
so that it can be understood apart from the text and must define
all abbreviations used therein .
ILLUSTRATIONS: Illustrations should be numbered in one consecutive
series using Arabic numerals and be keyed into the text.
Name of author, figure number, and an arrow indicating orientation
should be typed on a gummed label and affixed to the back
of each illustration. Line drawings must be of high quality ; typewritten
pr hand lettering is unacceptable. Either the original drawing
or good quality photographic prints are acceptable . Photographs
should be high contrast, glossy prints . If possible, use black
and white; a charge will be made for color reproduction . Photographs
may be mounted or unmounted ; if mounted they may abut .
Magnifications may be indicated by a micron bar or in the legend .
Photographs which are to be reproduced without further reduction
must be so marked and may not exceed 6 13/16" x 8 7/8" in order
to fit the journal format. In general practice it is best to restrict
the length or depth of submitted photographs to 8 1/8" to allow
for legend placement. Photographs intended for single column
placement should not exceed 3 5/16" in width . Photomicrographs
will not be reduced unless they exceed the size of the page . Details
that are of particular importance should be indicated on
overlay sheets .
BRIEF COMMUNICATIONS: Short, original scientific notes may
be submitted to ENVIRONMENTAL AND MOLECULAR MUTA-
GENESIS. These should be approximately two printed pages
such as the use of abbreviations, preparation of illustrations, form
for references, title page, etc, are the same as above .
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Letters should be double-spaced and
will be subject to review for pertinence and content .
ALL MANUSCRIPTS submitted to ENVIRONMENTAL AND MO-
LECULAR MUTAGENESIS must be submitted solely to this journal,
may not have been published in any part or form, except as an
