THE U.S. FDA’S THIRD PARTY CERTIFICATION PILOT OF AQUACULTURED SHRIMP

On July 10 th , 2008 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an opportunity for third party certification programs
or certifying bodies (including those that are private, non-government entities that are independent of the businesses they audit,
other Federal government, State government, and foreign government agencies and officials) who certify aquaculture shrimp
farming and/or processing facilities for being in compliance with FDA or equivalent food safety rules or regulations, to apply
to participate in a voluntary third party certification pilot for aquaculture shrimp which was conducted by FDA’s Center for
Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) and Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA).
This talk will update Aquaculture America on the status of this pilot program and where FDA is headed in using third party
certification bodies to help assure the safety of the U.S. food supply.
