<strong>Community</strong> satisfaction survey<br />

The Department for Victorian Communities and local councils fund an<br />

external organisation to conduct an annual community satisfaction survey to<br />

measure Victorian residents’ perceptions about the performance of their local<br />

government <strong>in</strong> different service areas 44 .<br />

This survey found the key issue affect<strong>in</strong>g residents’ level of overall<br />

satisfaction with the council was town <strong>plann<strong>in</strong>g</strong> policy and approvals.<br />

A review of recent survey results also shows that community satisfaction with<br />

the council’s <strong>plann<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>services</strong> has reduced significantly over recent years.<br />

Results from the <strong>2005</strong> survey show that:<br />

the average level of satisfaction with the council’s <strong>plann<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>services</strong><br />

(52 per cent) was significantly lower than the council’s target level (62 per<br />

cent) and that recorded for like councils45 (64 per cent)<br />

44 per cent of respondents consider the service delivered by the council<br />

needed improvement.<br />

more consistent decisions (17 per cent)<br />

more consultation with community (14 per cent)<br />

more efficient/faster approval processes (13 per cent)<br />

too little regulation <strong>in</strong> heritage areas/knock<strong>in</strong>g down old houses (12 per cent)<br />

council should be stronger <strong>in</strong> represent<strong>in</strong>g community op<strong>in</strong>ion (11 per cent)<br />

greater enforcement of/adherence to <strong>plann<strong>in</strong>g</strong> policies (10 per cent).<br />
