pleasant to know that tliis James Quonoiwhit, as<br />

the name was then spelled, was one <strong>of</strong> the Apostle<br />

Eliot's "praying Indians." He was <strong>of</strong>ten em-<br />

ployed during King Philip's War in assisting our<br />

people and <strong>of</strong>ficers in tlieir expeditions against<br />

Philip. James and his brother Thomas, then about<br />

eighty-six years old, were at one time in active<br />

service with Captain Henchman as guides.<br />

Lake Quanaponitt undoubtedly received its name<br />

in honor <strong>of</strong> James Quonopoliit, but we are not told<br />

when, or by whom, the " Great Pond " was chris-<br />

tened with its present name.<br />

Eev. John Brock, tliird pastor <strong>of</strong> the cliurch,<br />

died in 1688. He was born in England in 16;J0<br />

graduated at Harvard College in 1646 ; preached<br />

in Rowley and at the Isles <strong>of</strong> Shoals; he was settled<br />

in Reading twenty-six years.<br />
