tower for the rigiit, and is still large and influ-<br />

The Baptist Society was formed in 1797, and in<br />

1804 the church was organized, with sixty-five<br />

members. It has beeu a great and growing power<br />

for good in this eomnuuiily, and a large congre-<br />

gation now w()rshi[) in their new and beautiful<br />

sanctuary.<br />

The Roman Catholic Cluireh (St. Josejih's) was<br />

organized in 1S5G, and is the largest in the town.<br />

Its first house <strong>of</strong> worship proving too small to<br />

accommodate the large and increasing congrega-<br />

tion, a new ehurcli <strong>of</strong> ample dimensions was erected<br />

in 1871. Its clergymen have not until recent<br />

years resided witliin the town. Tiie present <strong>of</strong>ii-<br />

ciating priest is Rev. Michael F. Flalley.<br />

The j\[elhodist Episcopal Cluireh \\as gathered<br />

in 1865, and by its zealous communion is doing a<br />

good work in the town. Its present tasicfnl and<br />

convenient church edifice was erected in 1^71.<br />

The Second Advent Society was formed in ISii,<br />

and built a modest tabernacle on Lafayette Street.<br />
