Proceedings of READIT-2009, Kalpakkam - 603 102, 29-30 Dec 2009 HYBRID LIBRARY: Wikipedia defines “The hybrid library is a term used by librarians to describe libraries containing a mix of traditional print library resources and the growing number of electronic resources. Hybrid libraries are mixes of traditional print material such as books and magazines, as well as electronic based material such as downloadable audio books, electronic journals, e- books, etc. Hybrid libraries are the new norm in most public and academic libraries. The new terms usage in digital library and in hybrid library is discussed below. Definitions of vocabulary on the Web: a listing of the words used in some enterprise a language user's knowledge of words Refers to the words we must know to communicate effectively. A list of terms relating to a specific subject field, together with equivalents and definitions (or explanations) in two or more languages. cf. glossary, language dictionary. TAXONOMY: Taxonomy is a controlled vocabulary with each term having hierarchical (broader and narrower) and equivalent (synonymous) relationships. Because of its hierarchical nature, taxonomy imposes a topical structure on information. NEW TERMS DEVELOPMENT IN TRADITIONAL LIBRARY WHEN IT CHANGES INTO HYBRID LIBRARY: J.S. Mackenzie Owen, TICER says in his paper “The future role of libraries in the information age” that the dominant factor in the development of libraries is the ongoing move towards digital distribution of information through the global network infrastructure. This implies a shift from the traditional role of the library as a 'clearing house' and service centre for printed publications, towards a role as a supplier of networked services for digital information resources.
