At its core, federated search is a single interface that has the ability to simultaneously search multiple data sources. Federated searching, also known as metasearching, broadcast searching, cross searching, and a variety of other names, is the ability to search multiple information resources from a single interface and return an integrated set of results. Although aspects of this kind of shared searching has existed for some time (especially with Z39.50 catalogue searching), the explosion of online content and the rise of Google as the dominant web-based search tool has made the development of this kind of searching more important than ever. FEATURES: Federated search posses the following features, Ability to search multiple database concurrently Search databases in real time Unlimited simultaneous users Ability to link into interlibrary loan system Display databases by categories Simple and advance search capabilities Faceted, topically clustered search result Sorting of records Ability to search local and remote collections as well as Internet resources and search engines using three modes http; Z39.50 and XML protocol. Ability to access electronic contents without further authentication. ARCHITECTURE: Figure-1 illustrates the execution flow of the federated search. A client enters a query the query is submitted to multiple search engines in parallel, the results are aggregated and relevance ranked and then finally the results are displayed to the user. Federated search tool utilize custombuild pieces of software called “connectors” that know how to interact with the search format of deep web databases to submit queries, retrieve results and extract the relevant fields from the results (e.g, title, author and abstract). ADVANTAGES: The advantages of Federated search are: One-stop shopping – a feature users have proven Enhanced information retrieval Ability to search multiple repositories without knowing the specific search options of each repository. Repositories include library catalogues, full-text databases, abstract and index databases, e-books, etc. Ability to create one portal for all library content 124 4
